Event Review: The 2025 F100 Grand Nationals

The recent F100 Grand Nationals in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, proved to be an eye-opening experience for a first-time attendee and owner of a modified 1966 F100. Arriving with a daily driver that boasts a full 2006 Crown Victoria chassis swap, complete with a 4.6L P71 engine, power windows, remote locks, Bluetooth radio, and factory air conditioning, a certain level of satisfaction with the build had been achieved. The comfort of these modern amenities integrated into a classic truck had become the norm.

However, the sheer variety and caliber of F100 builds on display quickly recalibrated that perspective. While the Crown Victoria chassis swap felt like a significant undertaking, it became apparent that this was often just a starting point for many enthusiasts. Numerous trucks showcased further enhancements such as 5.0 motors or even Coyote swaps, forced induction systems like turbos and blowers, aggressive racing exhausts, and meticulously crafted, high-end body panels finished with flawless paint jobs.

The experience spurred an immediate desire to elevate the personal ’66 F100 project. A post-show brainstorming session resulted in a tangible list of future modifications. Plans now include the addition of 20-inch salt flat wheels paired with new tires to enhance the truck’s stance and aesthetic. A turbocharger is envisioned to boost performance and add a modern twist to the classic engine. An air bag suspension system is on the horizon, promising an adjustable ride height and improved handling. The truck’s exterior will receive attention with a polished patina treatment to preserve its character while adding a touch of refinement, complemented by painted trim and accessories for a cohesive look. A unique body side exhaust port is being considered for a distinctive style, and the search for a correct year tailgate will aim to restore further historical accuracy.

Interestingly, full Crown Victoria chassis swaps appeared to be less common than front-end swaps, with a significant portion of the show vehicles retaining their original frames and engines. The truly exceptional builds, however, left a lasting impression. These often featured complete racing chassis, potent Coyote engines, superchargers for extreme power, and immaculate bodywork with mirror-like paint finishes. The interiors of these top-tier trucks were equally impressive, boasting smooth, supple upholstery and an array of modern, high-tech features seamlessly integrated into classic designs.

Reflecting on the experience amidst these high-caliber builds evoked a humorous realization. The beloved daily driver, once perceived as a significantly upgraded classic, now felt more akin to a rescued “bucket of rust” that had undergone a three-year transformation into a functional farm truck. Yet, this very feeling underscores the value of attending such events – to witness the diverse approaches and dedication of fellow enthusiasts and to gain inspiration for future projects.

Beyond the impressive vehicles, the most rewarding aspect of the Grand Nationals was undoubtedly the opportunity to connect with the owners and builders. Each individual had a unique narrative to share about their project, detailing the challenges, triumphs, and the personal journey involved in bringing their vision to life. A strong sense of camaraderie permeated the event, with exhibitors sharing a common thread of hard work, passion, and immense pride in their meticulously crafted machines.

As the event concluded, the focus shifted back to the home garage and the growing list of planned improvements. The online shopping cart, initially intended for a simple wheel and tire upgrade, now held the promise of a more extensive transformation. The experience at the F100 Grand Nationals served as a powerful motivator, reigniting the enthusiasm for spending quality time wrenching on the “farm truck” and embarking on the next phase of its evolution.
